Barbara J. Justice is a forensic and clinical psychiatrist as well as a surgical oncologist. The first African-American woman to be trained in general surgery at Columbia University Medical Center in New York, she is well known for her long-running New York radio show, ''Medical View and You,'' and was honored in 1996 when Mayor David Dinkins proclaimed a citywide ''Barbara Justice Day'' for her contribution to the health of the community. Outspoken in her support of HIV treatment and intervention, Dr. Justice was one of the few physicians who treated HIV when it first appeared, and has lectured internationally on this subject. She is a well-known expert in psychotherapy as well as pharmacology. == Education and Training == Justice received a BA form the City University of New York, and did Post BA/ Pre Med studies at both Columbia University and Connecticut College. Upon attaining her MD from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington DC in 1977, she had an interest in pursuing both surgery and psychiatry, and intended to eventually practice both. Starting with surgery, she completed fellowships in both Surgical Oncology and Endoscopy at Columbia University Medical Center. Sixteen years later, she completed a residency in psychiatry at Columbia, while concurrently studying psychotherapy at the Institute for Psychoanalytic Education in New York. For coursework in forensic psychiatry, she completed a fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles. Justice is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology and as a Qualified Medical Examiner (Q.M.E.)
